You may have never heard this term before, but trust me, you are bound to hear it a lot more in the future.

So what is BIO HACKING

According to some, it´s the desire to show up as the best version of ourselves. According to others, it´s about using the latest science and practical guidance to improve how you feel every day.

Considering these definitions, I guess I can safely say that I´ve been biohacking myself for a while. And I’ve been pretty successful in helping others bio hack themselves too, mainly by adopting healthier diets & lifestyles.

But the type of biohacking I wanted to share with you today is a little different and a little more sexy, but very complementary to the one I practice on a daily basis.

On a recent visit to New York, I was invited to check out the uber cool om.life Wellness Spa which is like “biohacking heaven”.

They offer everything from cryotherapy to infrared sauna via floatation therapy and shamanic energy healing. It´s a true healing centre for your body, your mind and your soul.

I was booked in for an infrared sauna followed by a 90´ floatation therapy session.

I´ve been doing infrared saunas for quite some time and I must say, I really love them.

It´s a great way to sweat out a hangover (as long as you make sure to stay hydrated) to recover after exercise or to relieve pain. I used to do them quite regularly after injuring my ankle and they always really helped reduce the pain and the swelling.

Other therapeutic effects of using an infrared sauna are reducing stress, shrinking belly fat, purifying the skin, improve skin tone, boosting the immune system, reducing wrinkles, stimulating collagen production, and increasing energy.

Infrared saunas also work to remove harmful impurities, waste, toxins, and heavy metals from fat cells that are found deep within the body. This is the part I´m interested in if I´ve had a couple of drinks (yes that’s all it takes to make me feel hungover these days) the night before.

The infrared sauna lasted 30´ and given the great company I was in, time flew by.

Then it was time for the floatation therapy and let’s just say that the idea of spending 90 minutes in a tank on my own was making me slightly anxious…

But over the last few years, I´ve come to realize that the things I resist and feel the most anxious about are generally the things I need the most.

I was once the person who walked out of a Yoga class after 5 minutes because I couldn’t bear to sit still but learning to be still and practising Yoga & Meditation are probably the two most powerful things I have done in the last couple of years to find stillness and peace within myself.

Lying still and not doing anything is not exactly something that comes naturally to me but I decided to just roll with it and boy am I happy I did.

It only took a few minutes and a few deep breaths before I drifted into this wonderful peaceful, meditative and perfectly relaxed state. The next thing I knew, there was a voice coming out of the speakers to wake me up.

I felt so good I truly wish I could have stayed forever…

So besides feeling super chilled, what other benefits can you expect to reap from floatation therapy?

Well as om.life Wellness Spa so nicely put it, floatation therapy gives the body a rest, the mind a quiet space and the spirit a place to be free.

Floating naturally lowers stress hormones, releases endorphins, and gives the mind a clear space, the effects of which can last for days. It also has amazing beauty benefits such as detoxification, magnesium absorption, and gives the skin a nice afterglow. Again, regardless of the state, you´re in, floatation therapy will benefit you.

And even though I was a little apprehensive of the experience at first, I would go back in a heartbeat. In fact, I wish I could go back right now. But I can’t, so maybe if you´re in New York, you can go enjoy it for me?

om.life Wellness Spa is open every day except Tuesdays from 9 am to 9pm.
